I dreamt of tigers last night. There were two of them—ferocious beasts one atop another, tearing at each other in a cannibalistic manner. I was part of the mesmerized crowd, deriving a sadistic amusement from their pain. Though there was no barrier preventing the tigers from turning on us should they so choose, I could smell no fear in the crowd. Even stranger, I wasn’t scared. Only appalled at what I saw, what I could not understand.
The funny thing is, all the while I was aware that I was dreaming. Somehow, my consciousness had resurfaced in the midst of my troubled sleep and I knew that what I was seeing was not real, but only a figment of my imagination. Yet I saw everything plainly, envisioned each detail with the utmost clarity, knowing full well at the same time that I was walking the road of self-deception.
It’s painful to realize how shatteringly close to reality that dream was.
Haj, that was some vivid imagery you used man. It sounds really hellish and reminds me of some of my nightmares…waking up in a cold sweat. But I don’t have many, which is good, alhamdulillah.
Consider Target Theory, like I told you.
ps: your new blog header looks awesome, I must say
“Asmaa, how do I change my blog header. It’s a matter of life and death.”
“posted @ 2:46 am”
Did you sign on to Blogger right after waking up?
Umar, no, she only slept after 2:46 am. YOU on the other hand, posted at 8:42 am – did you sign on to blogger right after you woke up? >:)
By the way, your comment had nothing to do with Hajera’s post. That is unnacceptable.
No, I posted after getting home from work.
so, coming back to the post —
how is the dream interpreted?
hajera, can you suggest good books for dream interpretation by muslims?
Anon, perhaps I should wait for Hajera’s response on this…but..
But, in general, be very careful when you get into the interpretations of dreams. Many of them are bogus and I have yet to come across a good authentic one. But, there may be one out there that I’m totally ignorant of.
I had this one dream book by some sheikh that was absolutely ridiculous. If you look something up – let’s say tigers – it’ll say something like this: if you see a tiger in your dream this means you will die or get sick or be healed, or get married, or someone in your family will get married, or you will excel in your job, or you will be fired, or you will have one child or you will have seven, or you will buy a new rug, etc.
It’s like, gee, thanks so much for your insight.
That was one freaky dream so I’d rather not think about it too much. What I wrote simply came from my initial reflection. And I haven’t read any books on dream interpretations so I wouldn’t be able to help you out there unfortunately.
Assalamu aleikum,
Hajera, in general, one is not supposed to tell people their bad dreams:
It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Dreams are of three types: glad tidings from Allaah, what is on a person’s mind, and frightening dreams from the Shaytaan. If any of you sees a dream that he likes, let him tell others of it if he wishes, but if he sees something that he dislikes, he should not tell anyone about it, and he should get up and pray.”
(Saheeh Sunan Ibn Maajah, 3154)
any dream can be interpreted in many ways.
there’s this story (maybe some of you have heard it)… to cut to the chase, a thief and a king had the same dream, but their interpretations were totally different because of the way they led their lives.
also, when dealing with dreams, becareful since it comes in a hadith (something to the effect) that the outcome of a dream can vary based on how and by whom the dream is interpreted.
i hope this made half as much sense as i had meant it to.
I didn’t mean the dream was freaky in the sense that it was a nightmarish sort of dream, but simply that it was a freaky concept, i.e. to be dreaming and not dreaming at the same time. After all, I was ‘watching’ it and not ‘dreaming’ it in some respect, if that makes any sense at all. But thanks for the advice; I do appreciate it.–>
